What Are You Eating Before Trick or Treating?

Calzones_2

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what to make for dinner before the candy-binge begins tomorrow night. I think it’s good idea to serve something hearty and filling—that way at least the kids won’t be eating candy out of hunger. But it has to be something they really love otherwise they’ll be too excited to sit still and chow it down. I saw these Calzones on dachsies and design—they might be a contender ’cause they look so fun. The recipe is here (but I would just follow the part about making them witch hatty. Or what about these Chicken Chilaquiles from Shelterrific?

I clipped this ages ago, but I forgot about it until just now. Basically it’s a nacho casserole—I’d leave out the chicken ’cause one of my kids is a vegetarian—but I could mix some other tasty things in. Are these good ideas? What are you all making? Can we come over for dinner?

My weird kids wouldn’t eat either one.
I may make pigs in a blanket and homemade oven fries and veggie tray.

The tradition since I was a wee one has always been chili with spaghetti. I am originally from the midwest, and we had some pretty cold Halloweens, so we always filled up on mom’s chili before trick or treating…now, my sister and I still make chili for ourselves every Halloween. She couldn’t make it home one Halloween, so she stopped and got chili out! Can’t wait till I get my chili tomorrow night!

Jill, you’re making me crave Skyline chili! (Did you grow up near Cincinnati–chili over spaghetti is their specialty!)

When I was little, my mom would ALWAYS make, without fail, Sloppy Joes and tator tots on Halloween. I absolutely HATE sloppy joes! We do something in the crock pot that Daddy (who gets off work at 2pm) can easily serve and have the kids fed before I get home (at 6). This year it’s a pot roast with carrots and potatoes. I started it before I left.
I’ll eat my dinner while passing out the candy (And a frosty brew for the adults)
